Gentle Souls

It’s been a while since I’ve written, and looking back at my last post about the beautiful young Scarlett, I’m so sad to say that she passed away on the 28th of April, which was last Sunday.

I don’t have children, and now that I’m past my reproductive years, I can’t have them. And because of that, I find it hard to fully relate to parents in situations like this. I can only begin to imagine how soul destroying losing a child must be.

I know that in this cruel world, children die every day, and terrible things happen constantly — but for some reason, this particular situation caught my attention. I think it’s because of that video where Scarlett gets the hat from Taylor Swift. She just looked so innocent and overwhelmed with happiness when Taylor hugged her. It was beautiful, and it stayed with me.

Following Scarlett’s story even made me start thinking about volunteering at the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I really think they do magical things. Sometimes I used to assume the kids were only asking for things like meeting their favourite pop star, but then I remember seeing a story on the news about a child who wanted to be a police officer for the day. It reminded me how powerful and meaningful these wishes can be.

My Nanny has now been moved from the Royal Adelaide Hospital to the Modbury Hospital. I couldn’t visit her for a while because I caught a really bad cough while travelling to Alice Springs, and there was no way I was going to risk infecting her. I also think the nursing staff would have kicked me straight out if they’d heard me coughing and spluttering around the place.

I’ve only just recovered now, and it’s been nearly a month since I last went to see her.

Yesterday was Nanny’s birthday, so Mum and I sent a big bunch of flowers, which you can see pictured below. I also bought a Happy Birthday balloon from the hospital shop and tucked it into the arrangement when I arrived.

Below our flowers are the ones my brother and his family sent, and below that is a photo of all the birthday goodies she received.

I love seeing flowers in hospital rooms — actually, I love seeing flowers anywhere, to be honest. Mum and I also went to visit her yesterday, and she was very happy to see us.

There are these two men in their thirties, both originally from Perth, who have gone missing in Mexico. One of them has been living in the USA pursuing his dream of becoming a professional lacrosse player, while the other was living in WA and, after this trip, was planning to move to Geelong to work in a hospital as a doctor. They were also travelling with a friend from the US.

I literally cannot get enough information about it. I keep constantly Googling the case, refreshing pages, looking for new details. It really doesn’t look good at this point — three people have been arrested in connection with their disappearance, and the tents they were staying in were found abandoned, with traces of blood inside.

I mentioned before that I sometimes struggle to relate to parents because I don’t have children myself. But from what I’ve read about these guys’ mother, I feel like I can relate to her on a different level — as a woman who’s almost certain she’s about to experience devastating loss.

Part of me keeps hoping that maybe they were kidnapped and someone will come forward demanding a ransom, but deep down, I know that’s probably not how it works in Mexico — not with all the drugs, cartels, and violence.

Just last week, I was asking Mum if Mexico was safe to travel to because I’ve always wanted to visit the Yucatán Peninsula and see the site where the asteroid hit that wiped out the dinosaurs. But after this? There’s no way. Even if I was on a safe, guided tour, I’d be thinking about these two poor guys the whole time. Sometimes the fear of fear is worse than the fear itself.

There are so many bad people in the world, but these two… they just looked like such gentle souls. And you can tell, without a doubt, that they loved their Mum.

I will say this: I want more from a Prime Minister than what Anthony Albanese had to say about this situation.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the brothers’ disappearance as:

“A really concerning situation.”

“Our embassy in Mexico is working with local authorities as well to try to ascertain what has happened here,” he told Seven’s Sunrise program on Friday.

“We certainly hope that these brothers are found safely, but there is real concern about the fact that they’ve gone missing.”

“Their mother is obviously very distressed about this, and we just hope for a positive outcome.”

It’s disappointing that he would represent our country on the international stage with so little meaningful substance to offer. Given everything that’s happening, his remarks felt hollow — rehearsed, detached, and completely out of step with the gravity of the moment.
