Pick And Choose

Callum and Jake Robinson

Jack Rhoad

There have been some very upsetting developments in the case of the two Perth brothers, Callum and Jake Robinson. Callum is 33 and Jake is 30, and it now looks like they have been murdered in Mexico. They were travelling with their US friend, Jack Rhoad, who is also 30. You can see the Robinson brothers and Jack Rhoad above.

Three bodies were initially found down a well, about 2km from where they were camping, and then authorities discovered a fourth body in the same well, which is apparently unrelated to this crime.

Although the bodies haven’t been formally identified, officials have pretty much confirmed they belong to the three missing men, saying only that the remains are in a state of decomposition and need to be genetically tested.

A Mexican official said it appears to have been an opportunistic crime — that the attackers tried to steal their car, and the Aussies and American resisted.

I just can’t believe they resisted. Why would you do that? Just let them take the goddamn car. But instead… they were killed for it.

And what I don’t understand is this: if the thieves wanted the car so badly, why did they then burn it — as you can see below?

In my mind, I keep thinking maybe they were kidnapped and that someone is going to come forward with a ransom demand or something, but it’s now all but confirmed the bodies are theirs.

Thinking about this situation, like I said yesterday, I can’t get enough information about it. I feel desperate to know what’s going on, and I don’t quite know why. Yes, it’s so sad. Tragic. And it must be unbearable for their loved ones. But ultimately, people are dying and terrible things are happening all over the world, and yet we all seem to pick and choose which ones we care about.

Maybe it’s because they’re Aussies, like me. Maybe it’s because they’re under 50, like me. But the reality is, I wouldn’t know men like that. I don’t have a huge circle of friends, and I know I’d never meet those sorts of people. And yet, despite the fact that I have nothing in common with them, and our paths would never cross, I feel like I can imagine being somewhere like that — somewhere you’d feel safe.

To have that sense of security suddenly turned upside down by people who don’t value human life the way they, or we, do… it must have been horrifying.

And then to learn that it looks like they didn’t die instantly — with blood and even dental remains found at the campsite, before the bodies were discovered down the well. I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s so sad, and I feel it. I feel so deeply for their parents.

I was also thinking about how we pick and choose what we care about, and how much of that is influenced by the media. In this case, the coverage has painted such a vivid picture of the boys’ lives — one was a sports star, the other a doctor — and they’ve shared lots of personal photos of them. Maybe that’s why this has hit me harder. Maybe it’s the Aussie connection.

I don’t know.

I went to see Nanny again this evening, and I’ve noticed she’s becoming very grumpy. When I walked into her room, she was talking about how horrible the staff were — right in front of a staff member. Then, when he left, she started crying and saying how awful they were being to her.

She’s said this before, and I mentioned it to her daughter, who said that sometimes the way Nanny feels about how the staff treat her might be her interpretation, rather than what’s actually happening.

While I was there, her meal arrived. She had a big chunk of meat on her plate with some vegetables. I’ve been a vegetarian for a very long time, so I don’t know much about meat, but in the past, I’d sometimes have a slice of ham on a pizza or in a sandwich, so I can identify pork. Whatever was on her plate wasn’t pork — maybe it was beef or steak. Maybe even veal — I honestly couldn’t tell you.

She asked me to cut it up for her, and of course I did, but as I cut into it, I was reminded again why I’m vegetarian. I just can’t eat meat. Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t. There’s something about eating the flesh of an animal that was once alive that I just can’t stomach. I’m really borderline vegan at this point.

Tonight there were no staff around, and Nanny wanted to go to the bathroom, so I helped her. I got her changed into her nightgown and ready for bed. It was the ultimate role reversal — she used to do the same for me when I was a young child.

She was quite upset, saying that if she didn’t have her daughter, she wouldn’t have anyone visiting her. I’ve missed a lot of time visiting her because of my cough, but now I’ve decided I’m going to try and go every day
